How to choose a good fish oil for your dog

Choosing a good quality fish oil for your dog requires some attention to the product's source, purity, and nutritional content. Here are some tips for choosing the best fish oil for your dog:

  1. Check for purity
    • Tested for contamination: Choose an oil that has been tested for heavy metals (such as mercury), PCBs, and dioxins. This ensures that the product is safe for your dog.
    • Certification: Check if the product has certifications from third-party organizations such as IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards).
  2. Omega-3 content
    • High content of DHA and EPA: Make sure the fish oil has a high content of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), as these are the most important fatty acids for your dog's health.
    • Read the label: Choose an oil where the amounts of DHA and EPA are clearly stated. For dogs, DHA is particularly important for brain and vision.
  3. Production method
    • Cold-pressed oil: Cold-pressed fish oil retains more of the beneficial substances, as it is not exposed to high heat.
    • Liquid vs. capsules: Liquid oil is often easier to dose for dogs, but make sure it is packaged in dark bottles to prevent oxidation.
  4. Additives and freshness
    • No additives: Avoid products with unnecessary fillers or artificial flavors.
    • Check shelf life: Fish oil can become rancid, so choose a product with antioxidants like Vitamin E, which can help maintain freshness.
  5. Dosage and adaptation to the dog's needs
    • Check if the product has clear dosage guidelines based on your dog's weight.
    • Consult your veterinarian to ensure that the fish oil is suitable for your dog's specific needs (e.g., skin problems, joint problems, or general health).
What are omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are organic acids with multiple double bonds in the carbon chain of the fat molecule. The important essential EPA and DHA fatty acids can be metabolized directly in the animal's organism, unlike fatty acids from plants, which require conversion in the body, resulting in a significantly reduced loss of effectiveness.

Skaga Omega-3 Fish Oil contains the nutritionally most important omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which are ingested with food and metabolized in the body. The effects and properties of fish oil – some scientifically documented, others generally recognized or experienced – mean that the best fat you can give your dog or cat is healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The most metabolizable omega-3 fatty acids are extracted from wild cold-water fish. Fish do not produce these sought-after fatty acids themselves but accumulate them through the intake of microalgae. Wild fish have a higher content of the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA than, for example, farmed salmon, where the feed typically contains plant parts and vegetable oils.

Effects/properties

The body depends on fat – this applies to both humans and animals. Fat transports fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K through the body. Fat protects internal organs. Fat is a concentrated source of energy.

There is general agreement that the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA (polyunsaturated fat) are healthy fats – unlike saturated fat, which increases overall cholesterol levels and the risk of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Polyunsaturated fat also reduces inflammation and is believed to have a beneficial effect on a wide range of inflammation-related diseases.

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid believed to have a beneficial effect on the health of both humans and animals, partly due to EPA's ability to reduce inflammation. EPA is also found in breast milk.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) also belongs to the essential omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary DHA can reduce triglycerides (the majority of all fat consists of triglycerides) in the blood, which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. DHA is the fatty acid found in the largest amount in the phospholipids (special fats that are part of cell membranes) in, among other things, sperm cells, the brain, and the retina of the eye. A low DHA level leads to a reduced serotonin level (neurotransmitter) in the brain – and links have been found between a low DHA level and several diseases, e.g., ADHD, Alzheimer's, and depression.
