Marking sticks are used in tracking work with dogs as a tool to help both the dog and handler navigate and evaluate the track.

I use the marking sticks as a gate in my obedience training. In many of the exercises in the LP program, a straight retrieve or a tight turn around, for example, cones, is desired. Here, the marking sticks are super practical to use as a tool to help the dog understand what it needs to do, while also teaching muscle memory in that specific part of the exercise.

Use of Marking Sticks in Tracking Work

1. Defining the Start and End of the Track
   
   Starting Point: A marking stick can be used to clearly mark the start of the track. This helps the dog find the exact spot where it should begin sniffing and following the scent.
   
   Ending Point: Marking sticks can also be used to mark the end of the track, so the handler knows when the training exercise is complete.
2. Orientation and Navigation
   
   Direction Changes: During longer tracks, marking sticks can be used to mark changes in direction. This helps the handler understand and remember the course of the track and provides visual cues as to where the track continues.
   
   Milestones: By placing marking sticks along the track, the handler can keep track of how far the dog has come and ensure it is following the correct path.
3. Evaluation and Training
   
   Precision: Marking sticks can help evaluate the dog's precision. By placing sticks at specific points along the track, the handler can assess how accurately the dog is following the scent.
   
   Recall: If the dog loses the track, marking sticks can help the handler bring the dog back to the last known point on the track so it can try again.

   Visual Aids: For new handlers learning about tracking work, marking sticks can serve as visual aids that make it easier to understand the track's structure and follow the dog's progress.
