Nose Work has quickly become a super popular dog sport in Denmark. Nose Work is a sport for all dogs and all handlers. Dogs often learn to discriminate between different scents quite quickly. You can get started with Nose Work training quickly. It doesn't require expensive or advanced equipment. You can start with a little lavender hydrosol, a couple of metal containers for scent, and you're good to go.

In Nose Work, lavender, eucalyptus, and bay leaves are used as official scents in different classes of competitions and training.

NW1 - Beginner Class

• Scent: Lavender
• Description: In most rules, eucalyptus is the first scent that dogs learn to identify in the beginner class. This class focuses on simple searches in various environments such as indoors, outdoors, on containers, and vehicles.

NW2 - Advanced Class

• Scents: Eucalyptus and lavender
• Description: After the beginner class, eucalyptus is added as the next scent. Advanced dogs must be able to identify both scents and may encounter multiple scent sources and larger search areas with increased difficulty.

How are hydrosols used in Nose Work training?

They are safe and easy to handle, making them ideal for Nose Work training.

Using Hydrosols in Nose Work

• Storage: Store hydrosols in dark glass bottles and in a cool place to preserve the scent's strength and shelf life.
Quantity: Use only small amounts of hydrosols to avoid overwhelming the dog. A few drops or a light spray is often sufficient.
• Introducing Scents: Start with a single scent and let the dog become familiar with it before introducing more scents or increasing complexity.
• Positive Reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement such as praise and rewards when the dog correctly identifies the scent, to strengthen the desired behavior.
