I use balls a lot as a reward in my training; my dogs love ALL types of balls - typical Border Collie :-)

For example, I use them for trading games, where I throw a ball, and when they quickly bring it back, they are rewarded with an identical one. This increases my dogs' motivation and drive.

Balls are also easier to reward with from a distance, a quick throw when the dog is in the desired position.

Dogs can get "tired" of the same toy, so I often switch between what I use for training. There is a large selection of balls in good price ranges, so you can easily build up a good varied stock in your training bag. If the balls are only used with the dog during training, they can actually last for many years.
