Guide til the puppy

Often, you can just use the same toys for your puppy as for adult dogs. However, there are some dog toys that are more beneficial for puppies. Therefore, at unikhund.dk, we have tried to highlight some toys that would be good for the new puppy.

Long toys are always a hit with puppies and young dogs; they love to chase their toys across the ground.

When training your puppy, treats are not the only reward you can use – toys are a fantastic tool for building good relationships, motivation, and cooperation between you and your dog. But it's important to choose the right toy that suits your puppy's age, size, and needs.

Why are toys important in puppy training?
? Strengthens the bond between you and your puppy
When you play with your puppy, it learns to see you as a fun, safe, and positive part of its life. Playing with toys creates joy and engagement, which fosters a stronger relationship between you.

? Increases motivation and learning
Not all puppies are food-motivated, but most love to play! ? If you use tug toys, balls, or fur toys as a reward, you can make training more fun and effective.

? Helps control biting behavior
Puppies love to bite – it's part of their natural development! The right toy gives them a healthy and allowed way to bite, which can help avoid unwanted biting of hands, furniture, or clothes.

? Stimulates natural instincts
Dogs have hunting, prey, and chewing instincts. Toys such as tug toys, squeaky toys, and ball launchers can help activate and satisfy these instincts in a controlled way.

? Prevents destructive behavior
A puppy that has access to the right toys will be less likely to chew on things it shouldn't, such as shoes, furniture, and wires. Mentally and physically stimulated puppies are often happier and more balanced.

? Teaches the puppy self-control and cooperation
When you use toys in training, you can teach your puppy important cues like "drop," "wait," and "catch." This strengthens self-control and obedience, which is crucial for a well-behaved dog.

? Builds confidence in the puppy
When your puppy succeeds in play and training, its confidence grows! Dog toys designed for catching, shaking, or tugging can give the puppy a sense of accomplishment and boost its natural curiosity.

How do you choose the right toy for your puppy?
✔ Choose toys according to size and age
Puppies have smaller jaws and teeth than adult dogs, so make sure the toy is soft but durable and suitable for your puppy's size.

✔ Use toys that support training
If you're training retrieve, a small ball or dummy can be perfect. If you're training self-control and hunting instincts, a tug toy or fur toy can be a good option.

✔ Choose materials that are gentle on the teeth
Puppies have delicate teeth, so avoid overly hard materials. Toys made of microfiber, fleece, rubber, or soft plush are often good choices.

✔ Rotate toys to keep training exciting
If your puppy always has access to the same toy, it may lose interest. Use specific toys only for training to keep it exciting!

✔ Ensure safety
Always check that the toy is durable and free of small parts that can be swallowed. Puppies chew on EVERYTHING.

When training a puppy, it's not just about learning and obedience – it's also about building a positive and strong relationship between you and your puppy. Toys play a key role in this process because they allow for both physical and mental stimulation, fun interactions, and can be used as rewards during training. One of the most popular choices for puppy training is toys with long fur – and there are several good reasons why it's a perfect choice for your little four-legged friend.

Why are long fur toys a fantastic choice for puppy training?

Benefits of long fur toys in puppy training:
? Strengthens the bond between puppy and owner
An important part of puppy training is creating a positive relationship with your puppy, and this is strengthened through play. Long fur toys are ideal for interactive play where you and your puppy engage together, fostering stronger trust and attachment. When you use toys in training, you are seen as a fun and positive figure in the puppy's life, which helps shape its view of training as something exciting and rewarding.

? Activates hunting and prey instincts
Dogs have a natural hunting instinct, and long fur toys perfectly mimic prey that your puppy will love to catch and bite. The long strands on the toy can create a fluttering movement that awakens your puppy's natural desire to hunt and "catch" something. This makes long fur toys fantastic for activating the puppy's instincts in a controlled way that is both fun and educational.

? Soft and gentle on the puppy's teeth
Puppies still have new, sensitive teeth, and it's important to choose toys that don't harm their teeth and gums. Long fur toys are soft and comfortable for the puppy's teeth to bite, and they are ideal if you want to prevent your puppy from biting furniture, shoes, or other things it shouldn't get hold of. At the same time, the soft texture makes it more fun and less harsh for the puppy to play with.

? Perfect for tug-of-war
Tug games are not only fun – they also help strengthen the puppy's self-control, cooperation, and understanding of "drop." Long fur toys are ideal for tug-of-war, as they provide a good length and grip that both you and your puppy can use during play. Furthermore, it's gentle on your hands, so you can tug without getting tired or sore hands while training your puppy.

? Increases mental and physical stimulation
Puppies have lots of energy and curiosity, and it's important to give them something that stimulates them both mentally and physically. Long fur toys allow for active play where your puppy can jump, run, and tug – while also getting to use its brain to figure out how best to interact with the toy.

? Good for socialization and obedience training
When you use long fur toys in training, you help your puppy understand important commands and behaviors. You can use the toy as a reward when your puppy performs a task correctly – for example, to "sit," "wait," or "come." This makes long fur toys a versatile tool that can be used for both socialization and reinforcing good behavior in everyday life.

How to use long fur toys effectively in puppy training!
✔ Start with short sessions – Puppies have a short attention span, so start with short training sessions and gradually increase the length as your puppy gets more used to the toy and training.

✔ Use it as a reward – Long fur toys can be used as a reward for correct behavior during training. If your puppy performs a task correctly, you can immediately use the toy to show that it has done well. This creates a positive association with training!

✔ Variety in play – Make sure to switch between different games such as tug-of-war, retrieve, or simply letting the toy "escape" to mimic prey. This will keep training exciting for your puppy.

✔ Teach commands with the toy – Use the toy to teach the puppy important commands like "drop," "wait," and "bring." You can use the toy as an incentive to perform the desired actions and reward correct behavior.

✔ Create a routine – Long fur toys should be used regularly in puppy training to help establish a routine. The more consistent you are, the better your puppy will be able to learn and understand what you expect from it.
